30–19. Дополнительные исторические термины |
|
| |
Make a list of 5 historical terms in the text that are not presented in the chapter vocabulary in section 30–3 and that you feel are important. |
|
| |
|
|
| |
30–20. Краткое содержание |
|
| |
- Write 6–8 sentences about samizdat and tamizdat, summarizing the information in this chapter’s text. Use at least four connecting words and phrases from section 30–4.
- Organize your sentences into a well-structured paragraph, using the cohesive devices in 30–18.
- Work with a partner to edit the paragraph. Pay special attention to sentence structure and look for places where you can elaborate or expand.

|
| |
30–21. Лекция |
|
| |
Listen to the mini-lecture on the CD-ROM by Professor Ershov about the case of Pasternak and write down any new facts or ideas about samizdat and tamizdat that were not mentioned in the text in this chapter. In addition, note any turns of phrase the speaker uses that are typical of conversational scholarly discourse (as opposed to a written text). |

|
|
| |
30–22. Выступление |
|
| |
Review your notes from the text you listened to in section 30–21 and then make the paragraph you wrote for task 30–20 into an oral presentation. Pay attention to the difference between written and oral discourse. Be sure to keep your tone formal. |

30–23. История в фильмах |
|
| |
Watch the following film, based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s novella: |
|
| |
|
«Собачье сердце» (“Heart of a Dog”), 1988, режиссёр Владимир Бортко (Vladimir Bortko) — 130 min. |
|
| |
- Why does the story depicted in this film (and novella) violate Soviet cultural and political norms? (Why would Bulgakov have been unable to publish this novella before the perestroika era?)
- If you have read the novella, compare the novella and the film: which do you prefer and why?
- Select one scene that you consider to be the critical turning point in the film. Prepare a short presentation explaining why this scene is critical for the development of the characters in the film.
- Consider carefully the role of Sharikov: what or whom does he represent?
- If this film were to have been made in the 1950s, how would it have been different? What changes would have to have been made to allow for the creation of the film?

30–24. Симпозиум |

Review the chronology in 30–2 and identify events, personalities, or themes not discussed in detail in the text for this chapter. Pick one of those as a topic or a topic below: |
|
| |
|
Суд над Андреем Синявским и Юлием Даниэлем
«Бульдозерная выставка»—выставка художников-нонконформистов (1974)
История американского издательства «Ардис»
Бардовская культура в Советском Союзе: Александр Галич, Булат Окуджава Владимир Высоцкий (на выбор)
Художники-нонконформисты: Илья Кабаков |

Prepare an oral presentation on one of these topics or on a topic of your choice related to this chapter’s text, following the instructions provided here. Use the text and find additional information on the Internet or in other sources. |
|
| |
- Identify your topic and formulate the main questions that you will answer in your presentation. These questions will guide your research.
- Look at sources relevant to your questions and gather information; take notes in Russian. Consider also images you may use to illustrate your presentation.
- Write an outline that could become a PowerPoint presentation to use during your talk.
- Make a list of vocabulary items from the text that you want to use. If you need more vocabulary, limit yourself to no more than 5 words that you look up in the dictionary.
- Expand your outline by writing a paragraph for each item.
- Review your presentation for coherence; use at least four cohesive devices from section 30–4 in your presentation.
- Create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to illustrate your talk.
- Practice delivering the paper orally. Time yourself, and make your delivery of the presentation as smooth as possible. Record yourself while practicing the delivery of your oral presentation and review your recordings to help improve your delivery. When practicing, use notes, not the whole text. Each time you practice giving the presentation, reduce the amount of written text you are using; your goal is to be able to give the presentation from just a few written notes or the outline of your talk in the PowerPoint presentation.

Write a short paper in Russian (500–750 words) on the basis of your research in 30–24. Be sure to use at least four cohesive devices from section 30–4. When you revise your presentation into a written paper, remember that you should use markers of formal written discourse. Try to include participles and verbal adverbs and other turns of phrase more typical of formal written texts. |
