13–23. История в фильмах |
|
| |
There are not many films depicting Jewish life in Russia before the 20th century, but one major Russian film depicts Jewish life during the Russian Civil War. Jewish life at this time was not very different from the life of Russian Jews before the start of the First World War. Therefore, for this chapter, watch following film: |
|
| |
«Комиссар» (“The Commissar”), 1967, режиссёр Александр Аскольдов (Aleksandr Askol’dov) — 110 min. This film was released only in 1985.
|
|
| |
- What is life like for the Jewish family depicted in the film?
- Select one scene that you consider to be the critical turning point in the film. Prepare a short presentation explaining why this scene is critical for the film’s narrative and explain whether Jewish identity is an important factor for this scene.
- Consider carefully the place of violence in the lives of the Jewish family; how does it shape their lives?
- Describe the characters of Yefim and Mariya.
- If the film were to have been made in the post-Soviet era, how would it have been different?

Review the chronology in 13–2 and identify events, personalities, or themes not discussed in detail in the text for this chapter. Pick one of those as a topic or a topic below: |
|

Отношения между евреями и поляками (или украинцами) в Российской империи

Prepare an oral presentation on one of these topics or on a topic of your choice related to this chapter’s text, following the instructions provided here. Use the text and find additional information on the Internet or in other sources. |
|
| |
- Identify your topic and formulate the main questions that you will answer in your presentation. These questions will guide your research.
- Look at sources relevant to your questions and gather information; take notes in Russian. Consider also images you may use to illustrate your presentation.
- Write an outline that could become a PowerPoint presentation to use during your talk.
- Make a list of vocabulary items from the text that you want to use. If you need more vocabulary, limit yourself to no more than 5 words that you look up in the dictionary.
- Expand your outline by writing a paragraph for each item.
- Review your presentation for coherence; use at least four cohesive devices from section 13–4 in your presentation.
- Create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to illustrate your talk.
- Practice delivering the paper orally. Time yourself, and make your delivery of the presentation as smooth as possible. Record yourself while practicing the delivery of your oral presentation and review your recordings to help improve your delivery. When practicing, use notes, not the whole text. Each time you practice giving the presentation, reduce the amount of written text you are using; your goal is to be able to give the presentation from just a few written notes or the outline of your talk in the PowerPoint presentation.
