- How does the film you watched depict Soviet life in the 1980s?
- Select one scene that you consider to be а critical turning point in the film. Prepare a short presentation explaining why this scene is critical for the film’s depiction of its main characters and the most important problems.
- Consider carefully the role of the hero or heroine in the film you watched: for instance, “the President” in Promised Heavens, or Alexei Varakin in Zero City. What is it that each man is seeking to achieve and how does the social context in which he finds himself prevent him from achieving his goal?
- Compare the film you watched to any American (or other non-Russian) film you have seen. What makes the film you watched for this chapter distinctly Russian?
- How might Russians from an earlier period of Russian history have scripted a film with narrative elements similar to the film you watched?

б) You may already have seen Vladimir Men’shov’s 2000 film «Зависть богов», “Envy of the Gods” (one of the films assigned for Chapter 29); this film depicts life in the Andropov era (actually, the film takes place very concretely in August and September 1983). Consider this film’s depiction of life in the Andropov era and discuss its depiction of the different “takes” on the concept of faith and fidelity by its main Russian character (Vera) and its main foreign character (André). |

в) If you haven’t seen the Georgian film «Покаяние», “Repentance” (discussed by Professor Logunov in his mini-lecture on the CD-ROM), you may wish to watch it now. This film, by Tengiz Abuladze, was released at the personal insistence of Mikhail Gorbachev himself and who required it to be shown discussed at communist party gatherings. Watch the film and discuss the significance of the title: who is repenting? and for what? Why did Gorbachev consider this film to be so critically important that it deserved his personal intervention? |

Prepare an oral presentation on one of these topics or on a topic of your choice related to this chapter’s text, following the instructions provided here. Use the text and find additional information on the Internet or in other sources. |

- Identify your topic and formulate the main questions that you will answer in your presentation. These questions will guide your research.
- Look at sources relevant to your questions and gather information; take notes in Russian. Consider also images you may use to illustrate your presentation.
- Write an outline that could become a PowerPoint presentation to use during your talk.
- Make a list of vocabulary items from the text that you want to use. If you need more vocabulary, limit yourself to no more than 5 words that you look up in the dictionary.
- Expand your outline by writing a paragraph for each item.
- Review your presentation for coherence; use at least four cohesive devices from section 31–4 in your presentation.
- Create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to illustrate your talk.
- Practice delivering the paper orally. Time yourself, and make your delivery of the presentation as smooth as possible. Record yourself while practicing the delivery of your oral presentation and review your recordings to help improve your delivery. When practicing, use notes, not the whole text. Each time you practice giving the presentation, reduce the amount of written text you are using; your goal is to be able to give the presentation from just a few written notes or the outline of your talk in the PowerPoint presentation.

Write a short paper in Russian (500–750 words) on the basis of your research in 31–24. Be sure to use at least four cohesive devices from section 31–4. When you revise your presentation into a written paper, remember that you should use markers of formal written discourse. Try to include participles and verbal adverbs and other turns of phrase more typical of formal written texts. |
