|
«Борис Годунов» (Boris Godunov),1986, режиссёр Сергей Бондарчук (Sergei Bondarchuk) — 131–140 min.( depending on version).
«Минин и Пожарский» (Minin and Pozharsky),1939, режиссёр Всеволод Пудовкин (Vsevolod Pudovkin) — 110 min. |
|
| |
- How does the film’s version of history differ from the version presented in the text in this chapter?
- Select one sceneмthat you consider to be the critical turning point in the film. Prepare a short presentation explaining why this scene is critical for the film’s depiction of historical events and figures.
- Do you believe that Boris Godunov as an historical figure was critical for the future of Russian history?
- Bondarchuk’s film was released during a more recent time of troubles: in 1986, when the film was made, Gorbachev had come to power after a period of three years of transition. Gorbachev led the way for the implementation of new policies, including glasnost’ and perestroika. Do you feel that the political perspective of this era is reflected in the interpretation of Russian history in the film you watched?
- Is there anything surprising or striking in the interpretation of history that you would attribute to the political context of the transitional era?
- Pudovkin’s film was released in 1939. How do you see the historical period (pre-war Stalinism) reflected in the film?
- If you have seen both films, compare their interpretations of Russian history of this period.

Prepare an oral presentation on one of these topics or on a topic of your choice related to this chapter’s text, following the instructions provided here. Use the text and find additional information on the Internet or in other sources. |
|
| |
- Identify your topic and formulate the main questions that you will answer in your presentation. These questions will guide your research.
- Look at sources relevant to your questions and gather information: take notes in Russian. Consider also images you may use to illustrate your presentation.
- Write an outline that could become a PowerPoint presentation to use during your talk.
- Make a list of vocabulary items from the text that you want to use. If you need more vocabulary, limit yourself to no more than 5 words that you look up in the dictionary.
- Expand your outline by writing a paragraph for each item.
- Review your presentation for coherence; use at least four cohesive devices from section 4–4 in your presentation.
- Create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to illustrate your talk.
- Practice delivering the paper orally. Time yourself, and make your delivery of the presentation as smooth as possible. Record yourself while practicing the delivery of your oral presentation and review your recordings to help improve your delivery. When practicing, use notes, not the whole text. Each time you practice giving the presentation, reduce the amount of written text you are using; your goal is to be able to give the presentation from just a few written notes or the outline of your talk in the PowerPoint presentation.
