- Select one scene that you consider to be the critical turning point in the film. Prepare a short presentation explaining why this scene is critical for the film’s depiction of historical events and figures.
- How does the director convey his attitude toward the Russians and the Teutonic knights by means of sound and image?
- This film was made at the height of Stalin’s great terror. How is the political perspective of this era reflected in the interpretation of medieval Russian history in this film? Is there anything surprising or striking that you would attribute to the political context of the era of Stalinist repressions?

Prepare an oral presentation on one of these topics or on a topic of your choice related to this chapter’s text, following the instructions provided here. Use the text and find additional information on the Internet or in other sources. |

- Identify your topic and formulate the main questions that you will answer in your presentation. These questions will guide your research.
- Look at sources relevant to your questions and gather information; take notes in Russian. Consider also images you may use to illustrate your presentation.
- Write an outline that could become a PowerPoint presentation to use during your talk.
- Make a list of vocabulary items from the text that you want to use. If you need more vocabulary, limit yourself to no more than 5 words that you look up in the dictionary.
- Expand your outline by writing a paragraph for each item.
- Review your presentation for coherence; use at least four cohesive devices from section 3–4 in your presentation.
- Create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to illustrate your talk.
- Practice delivering the paper orally. Time yourself, and make your delivery of the presentation as smooth as possible. Record yourself while practicing the delivery of your oral presentation and review your recordings to help improve your delivery. When practicing, use notes, not the whole text. Each time you practice giving the presentation, reduce the amount of written text you are using; your goal is to be able to give the presentation from just a few written notes or the outline of your talk in the PowerPoint presentation.

Write a short paper in Russian (500–750 words) on the basis of your research in 3–24. Be sure to use at least four cohesive devices from section 3–4. When you revise your presentation into a written paper, remember that you should use markers of formal written discourse. Try to include participles and verbal adverbs and other turns of phrase more typical of formal written texts. |
