  9–20.            Краткое содержание

  1. Write 68 sentences about the Decembrists, summarizing the information in this chapter’s text. Use at least four connecting words and phrases from section 9–4.
  2. Organize your sentences into a well-structured paragraph, using the cohesive devices in 9–18; try to use other cohesive devices as well, of course!
  3. Work with a partner to edit the paragraph. Pay special attention to sentence structure and look for places where you can elaborate or expand.

  9–21.            Лекция
Listen to the mini-lecture on the CD-ROM by Professor Logunov about the rule of Nikolai I and write down any new facts or ideas about this tsar’ that were not mentioned in the text in this chapter. In addition, note any turns of phrase the speaker uses that are typical of conversational scholarly discourse (as opposed to a written text).

  9–22.            Выступление

Review your notes from the text you listened to in section 9–21 and then make the paragraph you wrote for task 9–20 into an oral presentation. Pay attention to the difference between written and oral discourse. Be sure to keep your tone formal.

  9–23.            История в фильмах

Watch the following film about the Decembrists:

«Звезда пленительного счастья» (“The Captivating Star of Happiness”), 1975,режиссёр Владимир Мотыль (Vladimir Motyl’) — 160 min.

  1. How does the film’s version of history differ from the version presented in the text in this chapter?
  2. Select one scene that you consider to be the critical turning point in the film. Prepare a short presentation explaining why this scene is critical for the film’s depiction of historical events and figures.
  3. This film was made in the Brezhnev era. Do you see any impact of the political concerns and interests of the cultural authorities in this era on the film’s depiction of the events of 1825?
  4. How would this film have been different had it been made in 1918, 1938, or 1998?

  9–24.           Симпозиум
Review the chronology in 9–2 and identify events, personalities, or themes not discussed in detail in the text for this chapter. Pick one of those as a topic or a topic below:
Тайные политические организации: Северное общество и Южное общество
Город Иркутск в 1826 г.
Исторический портрет: М.П. Бестужев-Рюмин, П.Г Каховский, В.К. Кухельбекер, П.И. Пестель, К.Ф. Рылеев, С.П. Трубецкой (на выбор)
А.С. Пушкин и декабристы

Prepare an oral presentation on one of these topics or on a topic of your choice related to this chapter’s text, following the instructions provided here. Use the text and find additional information on the Internet or in other sources.

  1. Identify your topic and formulate the main questions that you will answer in your presentation. These questions will guide your research.
  2. Look at sources relevant to your questions and gather information; take notes in Russian. Consider also images you may use to illustrate your presentation.
  3. Write an outline that could become a PowerPoint presentation to use during your talk.
  4. Make a list of vocabulary items from the text that you want to use. If you need more vocabulary, limit yourself to no more than 5 words that you look up in the dictionary.
  5. Expand your outline by writing a paragraph for each item.
  6. Review your presentation for coherence; use at least four cohesive devices from section 9–4 in your presentation.
  7. Create a PowerPoint or other multimedia presentation to illustrate your talk.
  8. Practice delivering the paper orally. Time yourself, and make your delivery of the presentation as smooth as possible. Record yourself while practicing the delivery of your oral presentation and review your recordings to help improve your delivery. When practicing, use notes, not the whole text. Each time you practice giving the presentation, reduce the amount of written text you are using; your goal is to be able to give the presentation from just a few written notes or the outline of your talk in the PowerPoint presentation.

  9–25.            Письменная работа

Write a short paper in Russian (500–750 words) on the basis of your research in 9–24. Be sure to use at least four cohesive devices from section 9–4. When you revise your presentation into a written paper, remember that you should use markers of formal written discourse. Try to include participles and verbal adverbs and other turns of phrase more typical of formal written texts.
